The second news this week about GOG? A PR stunt… not really, as the classic beat-em-up Double Dragon trilogy is quite an interesting game(s) release to talk about.
A trip down brawler lane
First off, it’s great to see Double Dragon, Double Dragon 2: The Revenge and
Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone in one neat little bargain package. Secondly, these are the arcade versions, so no level content missing, with multiplayer all present here. And this is another cool thing: One is not only able to play local co-op (something I still remember back in the old days in front of a cabinet, which again was in front of a restaurant during vacation when I had to wait as a kid to pass the boredom and avoid the waiting queue’s tedious small talk with other people). But it is also possible to use GOG Galaxy in order to play online.
How the online multiplayer feature affects the experience (after all, it’s all about sitting next to one another in these types of games and having fun) remains to be seen. My first impression from the trailer was infected by a bit of scepticism, because it seems that filters were used in this conversion, so some of that nostalgic pixel art is lost in translation. Still, it looks pretty smooth to play, and as the publisher/developer of the title is DotEmu, the iOS and Android mobile versions are also available (although playing with touch controls could be a bit tricky).
Twitch(.tv)ing fingers and (con)testing skills
Anyway, if you’re interested to see this release in action (or at least Double Dragon 2), you can watch the Twitch.tv speedrun video. Speaking of speedruns, GOG also holds a Speedrun Contest which ends on January 31, at 5:00pm GMT / 12:00pm EST / 9am PST.
So what are you waiting for? The game is out now and can be bought at the GOG website (with 20% discount until Thursday, January 22 at 4:59 GMT). It should be a lot of fun on GOG Galaxy as well. So why not getting two copies of the games and try them out with your friends?
