Star Wars isn’t what it used to be, thanks in no small part to George Lucas’ single-minded vision coming to fruition with his special edition director’s cut versions of the classic trilogy and the later efforts as a director of the sequels. But fear not, as GOG has quite a few great examples how gaming can overcome cinema’s problems with its second wave of Star Wars titles.
I still remember playing X-Wing in front of my old PC, with a real joystick, learning all the keys to press for handling the individual fighters. In a time when the internet wasn’t there and the only way to get help was to call hotlines or order walkthroughs from magazines (one was in the now defunct German PC Player), it was and probably still is a hard-as-nails space sim, but oh so atmospheric despite the outdated graphics. TIE-Fighter was also pretty cool, but also more accessible. And after that, it was X-Wing: Alliance in which one could fly the Millenium Falcon.
But of course there were so many other great titles, with the franchise going in completely different directions, like the FPS Dark Forces, the RTS Empire at War, multiplayer action Star Wars Battlefront and of course the acclaimed Knights of the Old Republic (short: KOTOR).
I have to admit that I lost track how many games slipped through my fingers, as Lucasfilm games began to be the Star Wars-only producer, which unfortunately also meant the end of product quality in some cases and the end of the company itself. Finally it’s possible to experience these games first-hand in GOG’s Lucasfilm Games Wave II:
This title was already available before the second wave hit the store, but it’s also discounted by 20% until Friday, January 30, at 1:59 PM GMT:
These Star Wars games are up for purchase as well:
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars: Dark Forces
