Indie platformers aren’t anything new, but the art style of this particular game is reason enough to pay attention to the release.
Developed by Alientrap Games, Apotheon is a 2D action-platformer with a metroidvania vibe, i.e. one unlocks abilities/weapons to return to specific levels in this huge non-linear open world. Even if the gameplay isn’t very original at first, the art direction is, as it all looks as if a Greek vase has come to life. Fluid animations and a great orchestral soundtrack add to the often bloody carnage on screen. How the plot and character development turn out remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting approach to combine fun action with learning about Greek mythology.
The game is now available DRM-free on GOG, the developer’s website or via Steam. GOG has a 15% discount until Tuesday, February 10, at 4:59 PM GMT, while the developer also has a discount which ends at the same time (including a Steam key). Same for Steam, but not DRM-free obviously.
For console gamers a quick info: The game is also available on PS4, and as a Plus-subscriber, one gets it for free in February with the typical rent-a-month idea.
