Phoenix Online Studios have been quite busy, and with branching into different directions with comedy and now sci-fi horror Morningstar: Descent to Deadrock, the company shows that it can do more than remaking or developing classic point-and-click adventures.
Based on a Flash game from 2009, Red Herring Labs will provide some decent scares with its first-person point-and-click adventure game, set on an isolated planet after a crash-landing. Trying to repair his ship and save what’s left of the crew, protagonist Powell whose job was to save a cargo vessel finds out that there’s something sinister behind the deaths of that ship’s occupants. Mybe he’s not alone after all.
A great premise to be sure, and even if I’m quite sceptical about the first-person navigation and how puzzles are integrated (hopefully not that many mechanical or sliding ones), the screenshots so far look pretty impressive, while the trailer is also extremely cool. Still, it remains to be seen how the end product looks and sounds like (especially with static screens), but with updated graphics and an improved soundtrack, this might just be what the sci-fi horror genre needs (even if it can’t compete with Alien Isolation, obviously).
The game will be released on February 17, 2015, with Steam and POS’ own store, in addition to some others as well (GOG, anyone?). To pass the waiting time, you can give the free Flash game a try.
