What an exciting week last week was, and even if GOG content seems to have lately prevailed in these pages like a promo show, I can’t dismiss this great news of big publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment joining the DRM-free forces.
Where to start with such a strong selection of titles already well-known to console and PC gamers alike? Maybe working from the first announcement all the way up and picking the most interesting titles (which are actually all)?
Bastion from Supergiant Games is an action-RPG with an emphasis on colorful graphics and a unique narrator who comments on the actions of the player. It’s quite short, but a lot of fun despite some awkward difficulty spikes in certain enemy encounters. The hand-painted style and awesome soundtrack with very good voice acting in combination with a strategic base-building mechanic complete this package.
Something completely different, but not any less fun is Monolith Productions’//TimeGate Studios’ scary F.E.A.R. Platinum, including the original FPS horror shooter and both expansion packs Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate.
It might be a corridor shooter with often the same locations, but the ambient music and jump scares add to the horror, but not without its fair share of blood and guts (still being on the German Index). What makes this game very memorable are the hallucinations the character experiences, while the enemy A.I. is also one of the best the genre has or had seen for a while.

If this wasn’t violent enough, or if it was too serious, or if you’re not into FPS games at all, why not try your hands at Mortal Kombat 1+2+3 from Midway Games? Not to be confused with the Steam release, this package includes the original MS DOS version, i.e. it has no Xbox 360 controller support, so everything is played by mouse or keyboard (or if you have another gamepad that works).
What else can be said about this legendary but also controversial series of one-on-one fighting titles than it’s the mix of very violent, graphic finishing moves and digitized actors that made it so famous (and infamous; see the German Index again)? Gameplay might not be up to the same intricate design of Streetfighter, but it’s still a lot of fun, especially with the later titles including babalities (turning the defeated enemy into an infant), animalities (same with animal form), and brutalities (even more violent moves).
Now if you can’t stand the sight of digital lives being blown to pieces, why not have a child-friendly and fun go at TT Games‘ LEGO series?
LEGO Batman: The Videogame shows the caped crusader in his original campy comic book form. While the introduction of voice acting is questionable, the humor is still there and intact, with the gameplay consisting of small puzzles and lots of block building and smashing, which is especially fun in local co-op multiplayer.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 also capture their source material perfectly, be it the lighter sort-of family entertainment of the first few films or the much darker follow-ups. With the inclusion of various spells, gameplay is even more varied, and the freeform, open-world structure invites both exploration and creative thinking.
