After having the pleasure to review Grim Fandango: Remastered, it’s great to see another film noir-inspired game with the adventure-metroidvania-platformer Hot Tin Roof: The Cat That Wore A Fedora.
Yes, the game is as quirky as the title suggests, with a private investigator named Emma Jones who goes on a big city adventure accompanied by her cat Franky wearing a fedora hat. The city is populated by other cats and boxes to interrogate or jump on, while murder mysteries have to be solved.
What makes Glass Bottom Games‘ title especially endearing is that this is a 3D game disguised in 2D, i.e. it’s a side-scroller enabling the player to go around corners. Gameplay revolves around unlocking upgrades for the revolver, but not actually shooting. However that works. So it’s more adventure game than what Castlevania or Metroid are about, although revisiting areas with new abilities/items is essential.
If the great gameplay idea and cute presentation isn’t enough to win you over, the jazz 8bit-soundtrack and spot-on voice acting certainly will. So what are you waiting for? The game is out now with 10% off on GOG until Tuesday, March 3 at 3:59 PM GMT or on Steam until Friday, February 27.
