Remakes are all the rage today, but it’s great to see that some classic titles receive as much love as they deserve, as is the case with the recent PC release of puzzle platformer Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty.
I played the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus back in the days when my PS1 had been given quite a lot of spin. Despite its many difficulty spikes, I simply loved these titles due to their off-beat humor with surprisingly harsh social criticism undertones. The games from company Oddworld Inhabitants were really out of this world and brought back the old Flashback run-an-die gameplay.
The story of factory worker Abe who soon finds out what the food he’s handling really consists of is as crazy as it is touching in a weird way. By finding other Mudokons (the species he belongs to) and rescuing them, the gameplay is not only about evading gun-wielding oppressors but also by commanding his peers to the exit. And this is certainly no easy feat with various devious traps on the way.
What this remake from Just Add Water brings to the table in addition to more detailed graphics and better sound are extra levels, improved (analogue) controls, new cutscenes and a leaderboard. The 2.5D backgrounds really look amazing, and if you haven’t had a chance to try the original, now’s the perfect time, although be warned that the difficulty curve is still quite steep.
There’s a 10% launch discount that will last for one week, until Wednesday, March 4, at 4:49 PM GMT. 2 separate DLCs are also available for purchase, although it would have been nice to have these included in the game as well.
