The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the most anticipated RPG of the year (despite being in production for many years), and there’s a new gameplay video fresh from PAX East.
The game has been in the making for many years, and while videos are nothing new in the dripfeeding information process of showing the public more of how The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks and plays, the newest video shown at PAX East certainly knows how to showcase the graphical fidelity and loving detail while also further dwelling on gameplay mechanics.
It’s only 7 minutes long, but the side quest on display is a good indication of more things to come. Music and voice acting are atmospheric and strong (despite some repetitive animations during dialogues), and there’s already a greet feeling of being immersed in this world by capturing the sense of loneliness when travelling through the wilderness. The change of pace is also quite nice when discovering a trail that leads to a cave, followed by using the Witcher senses. The change of atmosphere is also highlighted by the more sinister soundtrack and together with the lighting effects of a torch in the darkness, there’s tension felt all around.
There’s also a greater emphasis on strategic combat during the more difficult battles, in this case a Royal Wyvern, exemplified by evading attacks, using a sword enhanced by certain items and the additional magic that can’t be performed all the time due to its cooling down effect.
The side quest shown here might be a bit on the more standard side of fantasy RPG things, compared to what the Gamescom presentations had, with fewer moral decisions to make, but the pure sense of wonder when seeing this open world is enough to get excited. As the release date, May 19 2015, isn’t far away, it’s maybe time to pre-order the game on GOG or CD Project Red’s Website.
