With so many mobile games being released every day, it’s not easy to find the interesting ones, but Phoenix Online Publishing and Cuve Games seem to have hit the right spot for those craving RPGs in bits and bytes with the iOS/Android versions of QuestRun.
The presentation and gameplay mechanics clearly have JRPG roots, meaning that the game is all about turn-based battling and levelling up. In how far the often convoluted teen-angst ridden storytelling is present here remains to be seen. But first looks make it clear that the character designs are quite colorful and the music is also nice (although one has to see if the score is varied enough after prolonged play).
There’s also an interesting twist with characters dying and immediately being replaced by others, so that the player can try out what strategies work best. The press release says that it’s an “addictive, fast-paced, semi-randomized roguelike game”. Many words and promises, but will it live up to these ideas? After all, one also plays RPGs for story progression. However, with 60 enemies to fight against and various locations to visit, it at least looks as if there’s enough to do for a small online price.
The game is available now on both iOS and Android for 2,99 Dollars, so if you like the genre and want to find out if deep RPG mechanics and roguelike elements can work in a mobile game, it’s there for the taking or purchasing. You can still get it on PC as well.
