If looks and sounds are all which counts, then Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas might come from Nintendo and not Cornfox & Bros.
It’s pretty difficult to be original in these days with so many genres having been tackled in one way or another, but this action-RPG-platformer-mix is without a doubt very reminiscent of the classic Zelda: Windwaker. But of course that’s no bad thing, especially since there aren’t so many games on PC which can provide the exploration-Metroidvania-style gameplay.
Graphically, this looks quite impressive as well, while voice acting is also an improvement over the fantasy-mumbling sounds of the Nintendo classics. It remains to be seen if the gameplay and story progression are just as good, as solving puzzles, throwing bombs and navigating the seas isn’t enough to win any innovation awards. But then again, the criticism levelled at the game is quite unfair, because the big N itself hasn’t really changed its formula over the years, so maybe Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is just some fresh wind blowing into the gaming landscape.
It’s also worth noting that the price for the game is another reason to get it, considering that Nintendo’s monopoly policy rarely makes the Zelda games affordable for everyone. There’s also a 20% launch discount that will last for one week, until Tuesday, March 24, at 12:59 PM GMT.
Reader’s reaction/opinion:
What are your first impressions of this game? Do you think it’s just a blatant rip-off or a lovely homage to Nintendo’s series? Maybe you’ve already played it? If yes or no, do you know any similar Zelda-esque games on PC? I’m interested in your thoughts, so please comment or write me a message if you like :).
