With so many puzzle-heavy games covered on this blog, it’s easy to overlook that there are other genres worth paying attention to as well. Even if RPGs and strategy titles haven’t been featured so many times, shoot-em-ups (or short: shmups) with a bullethell attitude can fit in rather nicely with time management as well.
Elder Games’ Solar Shifter EX is one of such games with an emphasis on spectacular explosions, big boss fights and of course many enemy bullets to evade. The innovative gameplay idea is that the player’s ship can shift from one place to another. How many times this can be done remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an interesting strategic element in a genre populated with games which rely too much on near-explosion experiences.
I can’t say anything about the story yet, but as is usually the case with these types of games, it’s more about the overall feel of the worlds/stages. With not only space fights but battles on the ground with lush environments, there’s certainly no shortage of variety. Add some upgradeable ships and you have enough to keep the trigger finger going.
As far as first impressions go, this game looks fantastic. Being a one-man project like the very interesting RTS Meridian: New World from the same developer before it, the graphics are unbelievably detailed, while the soundtrack also seems to be of the highest quality.
At the moment, the game is only available for PC on Steam. Console versions will follow in early 2016. But there’s also a 15% discount which will last until today.
