It’s been a long time since Nintendo DS games featured difficult platforming games, but with WayForward Technologies‘ Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut, PC gamers finally get the chance to experience the second game in the series DRM-free on GOG.
Originally released in 2010 for the Nintendo DSi and later ported to numerous digital Nintendo platforms, the sequel to Gameboy Color title Shantae can’t hide its humble origins. But the 2D pixel art, great oriental music and also stage design are still impressive today. Turning into an elephant or fighting giant mechanical monsters is also a plus. The gameplay is reminiscent of Metroidvania games, so lots of backtracking is required. The DC offers improved HD character portraits, an unlockable Magic Mode, a new Warp system and other features.
Expect a rock-hard old-school gaming experience, though, and a rather nonsensical story, considering that the first title isn’t available on PC and not readily playable on the old monochrome handheld. However, the animations of the half-genie who whips her enemies into submission (or oblivion) with her hair alone make this highly recommended.
