Adeline Software International’s classic isometric action-adventure game Little Big Adventure just got a little bit more accessible with DotEmu‘s Enhanced Edition.
I played this game way back in the MS-DOS days and remember it fondly with some great graphics, immersive story and characters, something unparalleled even in today’s action-adventures. But I also remember the journey of young Twinsen who escapes from his prison and has to overthrow the tyrannical Dr. FunFrock to be a very frustrating experience due to the many deaths the character could jump into or deaths brought by getting shot at.
The game (together with its sequel) was already available on Steam and GOG, but DotEmu refined the gameplay with adjustable throwing and jumping distance (something the original always had problems with) and simplified sections. The interface with enhanced graphics has also be redesigned, while tutorials at the start of the game and an on/off hint system were added. A zoom feature gives a better overview of the screens, and an automatic save system plus full controller support are part of the new package as well.
I’m a bit worried about the simplified sections, i.e. if anything was cut, but all the other additions are welcome and might just turn this wonderful game into something less experienced gamers can enjoy. Even I might give this a go, as it’s been way too long since I played it and haven’t found the motivation/courage to overcome the difficulty spikes.
At the moment, the Enhanced Edition is only available on Steam, but maybe it’s only a matter of time before it becomes DRM-free on GOG as well. For those who already own the original game on Steam, the enhanced edition will be added for free. A rather nice touch, although I’m wondering if this also means one can’t change back to the old version, or if one can have both. The excellent sequel is now available on Steam as well.
