GOG release: “Noctropolis”

FMV adventure games don’t have the best reputation due to their acting and gameplay deficiencies. But the DRM-free release of dark comic book fantasy Noctropolis looks quite unique enough to give it a play.

Night Dive Studios are known for their resurrection of classic games, and FMV adventures are numerous in their catalogue, e.g. with The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour being the most prominent examples. Noctropolis is a dark comic book tale in which bookstore owner Peter Grey is drawn into the world of his favorite hero Darksheer who fights psychopathic villains like vampires and masochists, but who has gone missing. If this sounds like strong material, then it’s because this is promoted as an adult adventure game.

As with many games (or movies) which try to be very mature by simply showing lots of blood and some nudity, it remains to be seen if it’s just a style over substance comic book come alive or if there’s more behind the violence and dark tone. However, from the looks of it, the locations are very memorable and the whole idea of experiencing a dark graphic novel first-hand is intriguing, even if it means bad acting and not so great puzzles. At least this version has some dead-end situations and game crashing bugs from the original removed, while having a remastered soundtrack and comic book included is a pretty cool bonus.

The game has been available for quite a while on Steam, but this is the DRM-free premiere. There’s a 50% discount as well that will last until January 26, 1:59 PM GMT.
