Japan-exclusive releases are always a bit weird and seldom localized in the West, but hopefully quirky adventure game Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Combination will enjoy a wider audience in the not so distant future.
I’m not really up to date with all the Japanese games released in the past, present or future, as importing is out of the question due to high shipping and retail costs, although these don’t mean much in our digital distribution gaming world now. Obvious language barriers on the other hand… Still, when I heard about this title, my interest was piqued. Of course the trailer doesn’t show much, but as far as first impressions go, it seems to be all about investigative skills without fighting, something quite unique in the Pokémon series.
Being set in Rhyme City where Pokémon and people live together, young boy Tim meets Pikachu who dons his investigation Sherlock hat in order to solve mysteries. Being promoted as a cinematic adventure, it remains to be seen how good this idea works. Knowing most Japanese games like the Phoenix Wright series, this could be another visual novel, but hopefully with the same balance of interactivity and humor.
If your Japanese is up to scratch, you can already buy the title on the Japanese Nintendo eShop for 1500 Yen (currently with 20% off for 1200). As the response to the teaser was quite big, fingers are crossed that it will receive an English translation, with or without wishful-thinking Danny DeVito’s involvement as a voice actor.
What are your thoughts about the game? Did you already get the chance to play it (because your Japanese is good or just for the heck of it)? Do you know any other Japanese-exclusives I might cover? Maybe some which don’t necessarily need lots of text? Any quirky titles will be appreciated.
