Back in the days one didn’t need much of a story to simply blast away lots of enemies as in Moss Co., Ltd.’s shmup Raiden IV: Overkill.
With all that Star Wars action going on lately it’s easy to forget that one can also have a lot of fun with arcade shoot-em-ups. Raiden IV: Overkill is a testament to the rule of bigger, louder, better. Bigger boss fights, louder explosions and better score attack systems. While I’m personally not much into chasing highscores, the game sure looks impressive and lots of fun with various ships to fly, especially in co-op.
Being a horizontally scrolling action game, it has to run smoothly, and from the looks of it, it does so with some fantastic 3D visuals. The music seems to be quite catchy even if the Japanese-ness makes it sound like in every other game. But at the end of the day it’s all about the gameplay, and with the titular OverKill Mode adding new mission stages and scoring system, variations of the Arcade Mode, and a Score Attack Mode, longevity is guaranteed. A Ranking mode will also be unlocked when available.
The game has been on Steam for quite a while, but with the DRM-free premiere it’s now discounted until February 17, 1:59 PM GMT, so get it if you like classic shoot-em-ups, as it looks like one of the best.
