Survival horror and rogue-like gameplay combined make up the DRM-free version of Mandragora Games‘ point-and-survive Skyhill.
Rogue-like RPGs in dungeons or generally with a fantasy theme are almost indistinguishable these days, so it’s refreshing to see that a more modern space like a high tower and a futuristic time like post-World War III is the setting chosen for this game. With mutants filling the many rooms and floors, it’s an interesting concept to start at the top of the protagonist’s penthouse and fight one’s way down to freedom, while finding out a bit more about its former tenants.
If it would just be a third-person survival horror action game, then the idea would also be cool, but this time, battles are turn-based, levels/floors are randomly generated, and the point of view is like looking from the side at a dollhouse. However, the comic look provides quite a few splatter effects. It might not feel as scary as Silent Hill (especially with such a thin story), but not knowing what’s lurking behind a door in the dark is unsettling nevertheless.
Of course, RPG-like leveling up is present, as is crafting weapons, finding food and tools, in order to survive. With no save slots available, tension is created with this risk and reward system. So even if the gameplay looks repetitive, the moody setting is a nice change for the genre.
The game is now available on GOG with a 25% discount that will last until August 3, 12:59 PM UTC.
