Detective work and crime stories cannot only be found in adventure games like mystery thriller Still Life and FMV titles Casebook Trilogy or Her Story, but can also have a strategic component as in Weappy‘s This is the Police.
Playing as police chief Jack Boyd, the player has to make sure that he earns 150 000 Dollars before his retirement in 180 days. Depending on decisions and the way he handles suspects, the press and his staff, his reputation can suffer in the process, or it doesn’t. Despite some adventure game elements like collecting evidence and interrogating suspects, the game plays more like a business simulation, as paying police officers is as much part of the job as dealing with the church, mayor, Labor Party, and crime bosses populating the city of Freeburg.
If this all sounds like social and political commentary about a rather touchy subject, rest assured that the developer seems to handle the pressure quite well, as a recent open letter addressed these issues, i.e. that they don’t have any intention to make the police force look bad. Be it as it may, the gameplay seems to be a great mix of different genres with many personal and moral decisions to make and very uncomfortable situations to sit through. In addition to a unique art style (that is somehow reminiscent of Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today, having the police chief voiced by the same actor who did Duke Nukem 3D might not seem like the best idea at first, but maybe the exaggerated delivery of lines adds something more comical along the hardboiled cop way.
The game is now available for PC with a 10% discount that will last until August 9, 3:59 PM UTC.
