It has been a long journey for former art student and magic/science world traveler April Ryan together with new dreamer Zoë Castillo and many other characters from Funcom‘s epic adventure games The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, but Red Thread Games finally concludes their episodic series with Dreamfall Chapters – Book 5: REDUX.
Even if I still haven’t played the previous four episodes and only discussed the release of Book 2: Rebels and I don’t want to spoil anything from the story for you or myself, I’m more than happy to report about the final product’s release. Considering that it took so long for it to materialize with the typically problematic time gaps in between episodes, it’s great to be finally able to experience it all in one go.
It’s been almost 2 months already, so the news isn’t that fresh anymore, but in order to keep track of all the episodic games and especially when they’re complete, it shouldn’t be wasted space or time to write about the fifth instalment. The trailer does a good job of tearing at one’s heart strings when using that final song from Dreamfall: The Longest Journey that was such a powerful and sad ending, even if it opened up more questions than providing satisfying answers. The same holds true for this quick glimpse at the final episode, as it only presents characters and scenes without any explanations.
So I’m looking forward to play through the whole series of games and review them if time allows. It might be this or next year, but these fantastically-looking and greatly written games deserve all the time and attention that was spent on making them, even if some adventure game purists might have problems with the later puzzle design that would follow Telltale Games’ approach of interactive movie storytelling.
