Stealth-action games have received something of a renaissance lately, and Frozenbyte‘s Shadwen is another medieval assassination romp.
It’s great to see mechanics of the Thief series still in motion, and even if the story about an assassin to kill a king while protecting a young girl doesn’t sound very engaging, it’s the gameplay that counts. Being able to use all kinds of silent weapons is on thing, but utilizing the environment by setting all sorts of traps is quite another, more fun way to dispose of all the guards populating the dark streets of the city.
Graphically, the game might not set new standards, but it sure looks lovely with nice lighting effects and high-res textures, while the character models and especially physics system are great, too. It also seems to be a rather violent game in regard to the blood spurting against the camera and in all directions after taking down enemies, even though the conversations with guards and imaginative ways to kill them are funnier than gruesome.
A recent update of the game also contains 14 new levels, and to celebrate its 15th anniversary, a Frozenbyte sale with the following games/bonus content is going on at the moment, ending on August 16, 16:59 PM UTC:
