Stories: The Path of Destinies, Jotun or to a certain degree The Banner Saga 2 aren’t the only games using fantasy worlds and mixing strategy, RPG and action, with Nival Interactive having done something like this with RTS elements in 2000’s Evil Islands.
Of course a game more than 15 years old doesn’t have the graphical power like today’s games, and the character models don’t look very fresh, either, while the story about a man who wakes up without remembering his past doesn’t sound very original. However, it’s the sheer size of the game world and what one can do there that still impresses.
80 quests on three massive islands with 20 different zones is already intimidating, but adding the strategic element of stealth in addition to customized spells and weapons sounds more innovative than the generic RPGs that came after, especially since one doesn’t level up in the common skill tree way, but by automatically gaining health and stamina and then thinking about where to spend the rest of the experience points. Trying to hit specific body parts in order to inflict damage is another welcome addition to the typically less strategic mouse-clicking action-RPGs.
The game is available DRM-free on GOG, making it the perfect place and way to replay it without hunting down a retail copy or struggling with compatibility issues.
