One of the most impressive games in terms of scope and vision is finally available: Hello Games‘ sci-fi exploration action game No Man’s Sky.
Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away by the hype surrounding a game, so I’m always careful, usually avoid previews and focus on reviews of the final version or give a first impression with a release news article. At other times, the reason for this is also the lack of time and insufficient processing power with one’s current system setup or not owning a certain console. No Man’s Sky is such a game that fits all the bills.
With an unbelievable number of over 18 quintillion planets to visit, the sheer size of it is breathtaking, although one should take into account that these are procedurally generated. So of course it’s impossible to see everything this galaxy has to offer, and there are probably quite a few instances when one sees familiar animals and terrain formations. Still, being able to go anywhere and without any loading times is amazing, even if it comes at the price of very high system requirements which seem to have brought down quite a few user machines since the game’s release.
Despite lacking an intriguing story (so definitely no Wing Commander IV), the feeling of discovering new life forms and different planets while fighting in space is quite unique, so even if my computer isn’t up for the challenge of running the game, this is still on the wishlist radar for the future whenever that will be. It remains to be seen how this always-online but no massively multiplayer and more single player-experience will develop over the coming weeks, months and even years, but from the first looks of it, it seems to be an interesting sci-fi world one is eager to spend some time in.
