Firaxis Games‘ Sid Meier’s Pirates!, a remake of the classic simulation title, has been available for quite some time, but it took a while to be released DRM-free.
It’s difficult to keep track of all the reboots and re-imaginings of old games, so this one slipped through my writing fingers as well. Not having played the original but still intrigued to try out Pirates! Gold Plus, the newest version seems to be the one to go for, considering how great it looks and sounds.
Calling the game a strategy title would do it a disservice, as it’s actually an adventure simulation with a mix of RPG and sword/cannon fighting action thrown in. Sailing on the sea in search of treasure and glory as a pirate, trying to avoid other ships to steal riches, plundering islands and managing the crew as well as wooing women is all part of the job.
The characters’ animations might not look that good (after all, it’s from 2004), but the water effects and general art direction in addition to some nice music and sounds make the Caribbean swashbuckling atmosphere more than tangible. So what are you waiting for? Either try out the original or jump straight into the new adventure with improved graphics, gameplay and storytelling!
