Bringing fun classic games back no matter if the gameplay is outdated is obvious when looking at the DRM-free version of General Arcade/Devolver Digital‘s Shadow Warrior Classic Redux.
id Software’s original FPS Doom spawned all kinds of imitators, so in order to stick out from the crowd, some new ideas in gameplay or presentation had to be found. 3D Realms did an excellent job with Duke 3D, but the tough guy approach also worked with bloody martial arts action in Shadow Warrior.
Starring Lo Wang, the game poses impossible odds in the form of humans and monsters alike against the man with dual-wielding weapon firepower, his trusty katana sword or iron fists. It’s non-stop slicing, beating up and shooting with much of pixel blood and guts spilled and pulled out in the process. So much in fact that the title was put on the German Index. It might not be the most thought-provoking piece of entertainment, but what it tries to deliver in fun splatter, it achieves in gory spades.
After being made available on modern PCs in its Classic Complete version (that has become free on GOG, but not for German gamers, as it’s region-locked due to the aforementioned censorship problems), Redux offers the complete package with the two expansion packs Wanton Destruction and Twin Dragon, and the original Shadow Warrior, while it has remastered visuals and a remixed main theme. There’s a 75% discount that will last until September 9, 6:59AM UTC.
