Minimalist graphics and simple but challenging gameplay are part of what makes Carlsen Games’ rhythm platformer 140 so charming.
You can’t get any more back to the roots in games than using a ball, as in Pong, but in this case, the form is used to roll, while changing to a triangle shape makes the “character” jump and a square makes him/her/it stop. A very simple idea, but one also has to pay close attention to the surroundings changing with every beat of the music.
The visual backgrounds and music are again very simplistic but also abstract. Electronic tunes create a synaesthesia feeling, as high concentration is essential to overcome all the obstacles. There isn’t much else to say about story or world-building, because the main goal is to complete each level that is part puzzle and part fast reflex training, while having basic skills in seeing rhythm patterns is just as important to progress.
The game was already released in 2013 and won numerous awards, so it’s great to see it finally on GOG with a 20% discount that will last until September 14, 12:59 PM UTC.
