Sci-fi, strategy and indie games with pixel art are very common these days, but if these parts all work together as in Massive Damage, Inc.‘s Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander, then that’s more than alright.
Halcyon 6 is the last fortress of humanity to fight against incoming alien masses, and it’s up to the player to micromanage its leftover resources, re-building its defenses and battling it out with the invaders in a turn-based Final Fantasy style. While this sounds all rather familiar, the mix of FTL: Faster than Light, Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars (or the original), the X-COM series, and other strategy titles seems to work quite well.
Throwing all these genres together means that the player has a lot to think about and to do. Base Building, crew management, exploration, and tactical combat combined make for quite an ambitious project, and it’s certainly not for those who don’t like frustration and can’t organize themselves. However, with different choices and story outcomes, playing through the game multiple times and finding better strategies sounds like a great idea to get involved, while the graphics are quite lovely to look at as well.
The game is now available on PC with a 15% launch discount that will last until September 20, 12:59 PM UTC.
