Games don’t always have to tell a complicated story, as they can be simply about blowing stuff up, as in Extreme Developers‘ top-down shooter Hybrid Wars.
Yes, there’s a story somewhere about megacorporations ruling the world and mercenaries being hired to fight for resources, but what counts is that these men are in mech suits and blowing each other into metal pieces. However, it’s not only robots, as tanks, helicopters, and titans join the battle party. When all hell breaks loose with weapon load-outs and mission objective to take into consideration, it’s no surprise that publisher WG Labs, part of Wargaming.net, makes this a reality.
It’s all a bit reminiscent of Renegade Ops, SEGA’s tough-as-nails military top-down shooter, especially with all the vehicles, but that’s no bad thing, as it looks and sounds great with all the detailed environments, vehicles, and over-the-top explosions. Cooperative play should be even more fun, but the single-player campaign also looks quite meaty with lots of missions and locations. Boss fights should shake things up a bit as well, so even if strategy takes a backseat, this should be an explosive ride all the way through.
The game is now available on PC, even with a Deluxe Edition that includes an additional playable character, a digital art book, and the game’s official soundtrack. There’s also a Season pass that unlocks two more hero characters.
