Game release: “BUTCHER” (PC)

October is a month when it gets colder and darker, and with Halloween soon arriving, brutal games like Transhuman Design’s hardcore 2D platformer-shooter BUTCHER are right on time.

If you remember the 90s as fondly as me with all the gory FPS games (that would soon be hidden away by some German censorship/youth protection people on the Index), then the violence in this game won’t really offend you, although the story about a cyborg programmed to destroy all humanity and therefore kill anything that moves might have been a big problem back in the days (and sort of still does). But as with most horror or action movies, it’s how the end product entertains which counts.

In this sense, the over-the-top gore and bloodbath visuals in all their pixelated glory work. With up to 4 million pixels to paint a level’s wall red when disposing of enemies with shotguns, grenade launchers, and chainsaws, one soon finds it hard to see anything else than death in pixels. One can also use the environment (e.g. saws, hooks, lava pits, and animals), although the same fate can happen to oneself. The game’s difficulty level “easy” should already read “hard”, so the game is really for those who have fast reflexes and can stomach the uber-violence.

With all those late indie games trying to be very artful, it’s refreshing to see something like this pixel massacre with heavy metal music appear on the screen, especially since there’s no censorship…yet. The game is now available on PC with a 10% discount that will last until October 12, 6:59 PM UTC.
