Cute-looking casual games that are also accessible for non-gamers have another contestant with Rogue Snail‘s puzzle-RPG hybrid Star Vikings.
Plants vs. Zombies was an overwhelming success on all kinds of platforms, and even if the later games tried different genres and didn’t do the mobile monetization thing right, it was still great fun, even for hardcore gamers who wouldn’t necessarily admit it. The reasons were its comic book-like visuals and easy-to-learn but hard-to-master gameplay. Star Vikings is quite similar in both departments, featuring fun-looking characters and mechanics that offer both accessibility and various strategies.
Instead of fighting back waves of zombies, one has to attack all kinds of alien monsters on grid-based levels. Using a crew of vikings with different abilities, leveling them up and pulling off chains of attacks to conquer each procedurally-generated level seems to be a great time-waster, while a bonkers story mode, secret levels and a leaderboard should add to longevity.
The game is now available on PC with a 10% discount that will last until October 13, 10:59 AM UTC. The quirky soundtrack can also be bought separately.
