One year after the release of rogue-lite exploration seafaring adventure Sunless Sea, Failbetter Games‘ first expansion pack Zubmariner hits the bottom of the gaming sea.
Despite having been quite excited about the original game, time hasn’t allowed me to play it yet. However, it shouldn’t be a problem to write about the newest addition and keep it on the wishlist, as it looks just as intriguing, if not more so, than the original due to the creepy depths of the sea one can now dive in with a submarine.
Gameplay still revolves around exploring the dark sea, finding treasure and trying to overcome upredictable, procedurally generated obstacles and avoid dangers in the form of nasty beasts and even one’s own crew. It’s also about the wonder and horror to visit sunken cities and going even deeper into unexplored territory while managing food and supply. With a great hand-drawn art style and some creepy sound design in addition to poetic logbook entries, this should be just as compelling as the base game.
The base game also received a free update with new quests and events, plus some gameplay tweaks. The expansion pack is now available for PC, but it requires the original, so it might be a good idea to purchase both.
