Indie games are always a bit out of this world in gameplay and/or visual presentation terms, but Art in Heart’s psychedelic platformer GoNNER takes first place in weirdness.
Described by the developer as a “score-based procedurally-generated platformer with roguelike elements”, this already sounds strange enough, but when a story about a thing called Ikk who wants to cheer up his giant land-bound whale Sally by looking for a special trinket in dark places is added, things get really crazy. Having Death as a mentor who provides different abilities and a weapon arsenal further increases bewilderment and fun.
Choosing between different abilities and experimenting with each new level helps to overcome tough-as-nails challenges, but it’s not all doom and gloom, as the music and visual style create a unique experience that complements the crazy story. Blasting through enemies who dissolve into skulls and jumping around with dangers lurking behind every dark corner makes this quite unique in the crowded indie platformer genre.
The game is now available on PC as a standalone version and the Press Jump to Die Edition that includes the soundtrack (which can also be bought separately).
