Sometimes games can transcend all kinds of boundaries that movies simply can’t, and Fishing Cactus‘ 3D typing action-adventure Epistory – Typing Chronicles is one of those few memorable moments in gaming.
As strange as it sounds, but the game really works with typing in letters in order to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Forming the right words of opponents or spells at the right time is part of the experience, but it doesn’t stop there. The story is also about writing, i.e. a writer asking her muse to help her write her newest book, because she lacks inspiration. On another narrative level, one plays a girl riding a fox to prevent insects to corrupt an origami world.
Unlike a game like Typing of the Dead (a spin-off of classic arcade on-rails shooter The House of the Dead), the game is presented in a much more colorful world. It actually looks fantastic with its papercraft style and amazing background visuals. Voice acting and music sound great as well. The mix of keyboard typing combat and light RPG elements with exploration sounds intriguing, especially since the writing speed also influences the game’s difficulty and how the world changes.
The game has been available on Steam for some time, but is now DRM-free on GOG with a 35% discount that will last until October 25, 12:59 PM UTC.
