GOG release: “Zombasite”

The Halloween specials didn’t involve a lot of zombies and DRM-free release news had to be kept on hold, so Soldak Entertainment‘s action-RPG Zombasite should fit quite nicely here.

Diablo-like games that rely on mouse-button smashing of multiple enemies on screen via all kinds of weapons and spells aren’t new, and while this game doesn’t look very impressive visually, it’s still interesting to see that the types mostly (but not exclusively) consist of zombies. That’s right, 23 in total are after the hero’s life, as he tries to survive the zombie apocalypse brought about by a necromancer’s infectious creation, the Zombasite. It all sounds rather silly, but at least it’s a bit different from the typical fantasy epics.

If this would be just another point-and-click action-RPG with somewhat mediocre graphics, then it wouldn’t stand a chance in the competition of Grim Dawn or Titan Quest, but it has some very interesting gameplay mechanics to set it apart. One has to lead a clan with different character skill and personality types while performing acts of diplomacy, trade, war, and raids on rival clans, which should have an impact on the game, depending on the choices. As each game also offers different monsters, items, and quests, replay value should be high as well.

The game has been out since August this year on Steam, but is now DRM-free on GOG. The trailers might not be the most exciting, but if the gameplay delivers, then this could be something special in the genre.
