Squeaky Wheel‘s Political Animals shows that voting can actually be fun in this quirky simulation game.
Looking at the presentation of the game, this could actually be a child-friendly digital boardgame with cute animal characters and catchy music. But behind the curtain of cuteness, there is quite a deep strategic game that requires enough thought with each turn to become the president of a country that has to decide between candidates standing for either integrity or ruthlessness. Despite its fantasy world, there are enough references to real world politics, although these are hopefully not as intrusive as to spoil the fun.
It’s actually to the point of reflecting the harsh reality of election that one will often think about one’s actions as part of the bigger political picture. Being able to bribe voters, fabricate scandals or raise funds and present gifts to influential people are only a few things one can do to support one’s own way to presidency. Using different staff types with special abilities further shows how much thought has been put into this game, making it an interesting alternative to Democracy 3 from the same developer.
The game is probably the best satire that could have happened to the strategy genre with sex scandals involving scantily-clad cats and political violence done by police-helmet wearing warthogs masquerading real life corruption and injustices. So if you’re up to the task, it’s now digitally available for PC.
