Slowly getting back into the habit of covering new game releases, Tarsier Studios‘ creepy puzzle platformer Little Nightmares is the perfect starting point.
Playing with childhood or natural fears in games can often lead to campy results, as in Resident Evil with its spiders. But it has seldom been done in a more subtle way. This could all be rectified with this title telling the story of small girl Six trying to escape the Maw, a mysterious vessel that is full of nightmare-inducing creatures.
For those who’ve played LIMBO or INSIDE, gameplay and presentation might seem familiar in that there’s lots of running and evading dangers, while at the same time being immersed in a world that is fantastic to look at. But this game is still completely its own (by a different developer as well), as the creature design and play with lights and shadows is more unsettling. It’s a bit reminiscent of Layers of Fear: Inheritance by making the player fear every step he or she takes. A truly great-looking and astonishing-sounding title that shouldn’t be missed.
The game is now available on PC and consoles in its digital and retail form. The latter also offers a 10cm Six figurine, the original soundtrack, a sticker board, an A3 poster in a themed cage box. If this wasn’t enough, buying the game online on GOG will give you INSIDE for free. This offer is only valid until May 12, 2017, though.
