Classic platformers come back in style with the remake of 1989 Sega Master System/PC Engine title Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap thanks to developer Lizardcube and publisher DotEmu.
Not having experienced the original story of a boy (or girl, depending who you choose) turned into a half-human, half-lizard thing by the Meka-Dragon, trying to find a cure for the curse, I’ve heard lots of great things about this RPG and platformer mix, so it’s great to finally be able to play it in a much-improved remake that still retains the spirit of the Sega classic.
The mutated anti-hero can change into six different forms (a lizard, mouse, piranha, a lion, and a hawk) and use their special abilities to conquer each level, defeating big or smaller enemies, and solving puzzles in the process. The various ways to play are due to each animal’s attributes, so a lizard can move along walls, a piranha can swim, and a hawk can fly, making it a much more varied game than standard platformers. Considering that the game is over 20 years old, the HD remake looks absolutely fantastic with an amazing art design, while the soundtrack is great as well. It’s also possible to switch to the 8-bit graphics for purists, making this the definitive version.
The game is now available on PC as well as on all kinds of consoles. Made with people behind the original, one shouldn’t miss this title if one loves retro gaming and is interested in remastered versions done right. Supporting DotEmu in a time when they recently closed their retro online gaming store (more about this soon) will also give them another reason to continue (re)making good games.
