It’s amazing to think of how many Serious Sam games there are. Starting life as no-brainer FPS in the vein of Duke 3D, the franchise even branched off into the turn-based RPG genre, so it was only a logical step for the muscular hero to wreck havoc on hordes of enemies in a top-down shooter. The story doesn’t really matter here, as it’s simply an excuse to throw as many nasties at the player as possible, resulting in levels bloodier than a slaughterhouse, but again with the typical anarchic sense of humor.
In addition to the campaign that is playable with up to four players, there’s also a survival mode that can be tackled with even 12, plus a versus, death, team deathmatch and a weird rabbit mode. The only downside to this, at least at the moment, is that it’s only possible online. This is something of a missed opportunity, especially since the awesome trailer makes one believe that couch co-op play is part of the deal. However, it seems that the developers are working on it, so hopefully it won’t take too much time to have fun in front of one screen. As is to be expected from a Serious Sam game, there are insane numbers of enemies that can be dispatched with an even crazier selection of over-the-top weapons. While it doesn’t win any prizes in the visual department, it should run smoothly enough with all that action on-screen.
The game is now available on PC with a 10% launch discount that will last until June 27, 2 PM UTC. If you buy the GOG version and own another Serious Sam game or Hammerwatch, then you’ll get an additional 10% off. Either way, GOG Galaxy crossplay support makes it possible to play with Steam users as well.
