Can a mix of FPS, survival horror, and exploration game work in The Farm 51‘s Get Even?
The story is as weird and unique as it can get. Mercenary Cole Black finds himself in a mental asylum, tasked by his captor Red to relive his memories about the rescue attempt of a teenage girl with a bomb strapped to her chest. This is done by the Pandora headset, a device that allows to travel into his own mind and confront the truth behind it all, even if it means fighting a couple of bad guys who dissolve to clear the level and one’s memory uncertainties.
It doesn’t happen very often that a mix of various genres is as unique and disturbing as here. Being a psychological thriller dealing with justice and reality fused with action and snapshot camera elements is reminiscent of the Condemned titles, Outlast, Outlast: Whistleblower or Outlast 2. Giving the player time to explore the environment and learn about the past is similar to Gone Home. It’s less body horror (despite the shooting) and more about unsettling and surreal scenes that play with one’s perception of reality and virtuality, which is further highlighted by the strange score of Olivier Derivière (who did the soundtrack for the new Alone in the Dark, Obscure, and Remember Me) that is composed of real-time MIDI pieces accompanying a player’s action with minimalist sounds. While the graphics don’t look that great, how everything falls together to create this unreal atmosphere is most likely the reason to play the game.
The game is now available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One in digital form as well as retail versions for PS4 and Xbox One, depending on the region.
