Before the Double Dragon trilogy hit the action-brawling scene, NES arcade-style game River City Ransom brought the genre to the masses, and now Conatus Creative Inc.‘s River City Ransom: Underground goes DRM-free on GOG.
I always knew that there was a title on consoles that made the one-on-many brawlers successful, but I’ve never played this series with the original Japanese title Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari due to the Nintendo system I never owned or because of an import-unfriendly market. So I wasn’t even aware that the Kickstarter campaign was launched to finance it. The plot is as uncomplicated as is to be expected from such a genre, with protagonists Alex and Ryan trying to defeat baddies on the streets of River City to clear their name in a kidnapping plot.
This isn’t simply done by punching and kicking through pixelated enemies, but by upgrading the fighting skills in 22 shops, unlocking moves with spending money one earns throughout the missions. With over 500 unique street fighting moves, dozens of weapons, there’s enough customization, giving the game an RPG element other genre competitors lack. Playing with up to 4 players in online co-op and arena deathmatch should be fun as well, especially when choosing between 10 playable characters. Despite its 8-bit look, the animations are smooth, and the chiptune soundtrack is extremely catchy, making this an essential purchase for all those who remember the good old arcade and couch console times.
The PC game was already released in February on Steam, but is now available on GOG with a 50% discount that will last until July 11, 1PM UTC.
