GOG release: “Battle Brothers”

Turn-based strategy games share the DNA of board games, and if they look like Overhype Studios’ Battle Brothers, influences are even more obvious.

Strategy titles don’t always have to go the JRPG road like Children of Zodiarcs, as they can be more realistic as in The Banner Saga 2. Leading a mercenary company in a medieval fantasy world, deciding where to go, whom to hire or to fight is as important as which contracts to take and how to train and equip the mercenaries in a procedurally- generated open world campaign.

The main idea of the game is to travel on the world map and earn money by completing contracts and finding places to loot. Fights take place in a different window, and even if one can only see the heads of the battle brothers and enemies as board game pieces, the game isn’t without violence, as all sorts of body parts can be cut off during these encounters. Permadeath means that all characters that die in combat will stay dead, unless they return as the undead. With different background stories and traits, losing people will also have an emotional effect, while three late game crises like a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge add more narrative weight to proceedings.

The game was already released in May this year, but it’s now available DRM-free on GOG with a 25% discount that will last until July 27, 1PM UTC. Upgrading to the Supporter Edition unlocks the soundtrack, a digital supplement with art, lore, and behind-the-scenes info, plus the legendary item Fangshire.
