Investigative point-and-click adventure games with a supernatural twist have another contender with Spooky Doorway’s The Darkside Detective.
There’s something about story-heavy adventure games with a pixel art look that seems to appeal to both developers and players, especially with Twin Peaks references. After Kathy Rain, this game proudly wears its heritage on its storytelling and presentation sleeves. Taking place in Twin Lakes, an American city that doesn’t only have twenty-four hour diners, but also transdimensional doorways, it’s The Darkside Division’s job to solve cases no one wants. Consisting of Police Chief Scully and Detective McQueen, there are dark forces to be fought against and not-so-intelligent citizens to protect.
It’s difficult to keep track of all the retro-inspired adventure games and while some try the more serious approach to storytelling, it’s nice to have a mix of both humor and horror, as can be seen in interrogation scenes between the police duo and dead writers like Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. There are 6 cases to solve, which is quite reminiscent of The Blackwell Legacy, Blackwell Unbound, The Blackwell Convergence, The Blackwell Deception, and The Blackwell Epiphany. It remains to be seen if the writing is as good as these, but as first looks go, it’s quite witty and takes a refreshing departure from over-dramatic scenes, relying more on weird and comic situations than serious subject matters. If the main characters are as memorable as Malone and Rosa, then this could be the start for a very special series or at least a very good adventure game.
The game is now available on PC with a 23% discount that will last until August 3, 1PM UTC.
