Game release: “Phantom Trigger” (PC)

Mixing slasher, RPG, and rogue-like genres together with its pixel art, BreadTeam‘s Phantom Trigger is for the hardcore gaming crowd.

Indie games with a punishing difficulty curve are common these days, and the less said about the number of me-too rogue-likes the better. However, it’s always great to see a developer try something new in the storytelling department, and that’s what happens here. Playing as white-collar middle-class worker Stan whose ordinary life is put upside down when he is thrown in a neon-demonic world, it’s certainly a refreshing twist on the slay-and-slash-everything-on-screen formula.

Of course the gameplay and even the art direction is highly reminiscent of Hyper Light Drifter, which means that enemies are overwhelming and combat combos are essential to survive, in addition to upgrading weapons. Trapping and freezing enemies, herding groups, burning bosses and dashing aren’t new gameplay mechanics, but if the game can succeed in making fighting less frustrating, then this could be a step up from the similar action game. A branching story with 4 alternative endings already sounds like a good incentive for replaying the game and being more attached to the hero.

The game is now available on PC with a 20% discount that will last until August 15, 6PM UTC. There’s also a Nintendo Switch version coming this summer.
