Game release: “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” (PC,PS4)

Indie games don’t have to involve pixel art and rely on minimalist storytelling alone, as Ninja Theory shows what’s actually possible with their action-adventure Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

DmC: Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West were all ambitious AAA games that partly succeeded and partly failed to make money due to Ninja Theory’s different approach to storytelling, game and art design, and this title looks no different or less exciting. The plot seems to be straightforward for an action-adventure, as it’s set in the Viking age and tells the story of a broken Celtic warrior who goes on a quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. But as the game was created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, this isn’t mindless slaying of countless enemies.

The company says that their game is a mid-size game, i.e. it’s half the size of a regular AAA game and sold at half the price. But this doesn’t mean it’s less impressive. While it shares some hack-and-slash elements, combat isn’t the primary focus. It’s more of a storytelling experience that deals with mental illness as much as with a spiritual journey involving difficult fighting. No leveling up, upgrades, or other shenanigans that are usually associated with the genre, can be found here, which is surprising considering that the title is from a company with combat mechanic experience. But then again it’s a different effort this time, with an absolutely fantastic art direction and sound design. Fingers crossed it will run on my PC, but as far as recent comments go, it’s pretty well optimized and runs smoothly on most PCs, and it’s again a game that benefits from the extra power of the PS4.

The game is now available on PC and PS4 in digital form. Even if there’s no launch discount, the price isn’t very high for such a great-looking title. If you want to find out more about its development, make sure to check out the development diaries or Q&As.

Yes, it’s terrible how many amazing games are released and we don’t have the time to play them, isn’t it ;-)? I’m so looking forward to play this as well. Fingers crossed it’ll run on my PC. But then again with so many other titles on backlog, I’ll probably have a new PC by the time I’ll be able to do it :-).

      • Kim says:

Aah I know what you mean… I’ve been playing more on the PS recently so my PC hasn’t had much love, and it’s getting to that point in its life where it could do with a few upgrades!

And I know what you mean ;). My consoles were put to good use before I upgraded my PC. Usually I prefer couch gaming, but with the right setup (now with a bigger screen), PC gaming has become a better option, probably because I still don’t have a PS4 or XBox One, waiting for the newer versions and price drops :). But then again, why choosing if you can have the best of both worlds with the PC. Ah yes, exclusives… damn :-).

      • Kim says:

Ha ha ha damn exclusives! 😀
