GOG release: “Quake IV”

Raven Software’s Quake IV is one of those controversial FPS that needs to be played, and it’s now DRM-free on GOG.

The reason why the game is such a sore pain for some is because it’s still not available to buy in Germany (so region-lock on this one!) and because it’s much more single-player focused than its predecessor Quake III: Arena (also missing on the store page for German fans). While the story isn’t anything to write home about with the usual marines vs. aliens scenario, the presentation is quite gory with a memorable operating table scene that was completely removed from the German version (in addition to other things). Fighting against the Strogs, a cybernetic race that wants to eradicate humanity, it’s up to a marine and his squad to go against them.

Using all sorts of weapon systems and even big vehicles, the game’s story might not be the best, but the action is constantly breathtaking, again showing that Raven Software knows how to do single-player campaigns, especially with sci-fi titles like Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force, a game that still has to be added to the GOG library. The graphics are obviously outdated in some parts, but unlike many console FPS games, it’s still nice to look at.

The game has been available on Steam for quite some time, but it’s now on GOG, making the sci-fi shooter saga complete. It’s also worth mentioning that the classic RPGs The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall are added to the library automatically thanks to a Bethesda publisher deal.
