GOG releases: “The Suffering”+”The Suffering: Ties That Bind”

Halloween is still almost two months away, but GOG already surprises gamers with a special treat thanks to Surreal Software’s third-person horror shooter The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind.

While I’m hard at work preparing for that special Halloween gaming week that doesn’t have a free slot for any other games already, this series would definitely have made it, but maybe for another time… Both titles feature death row convict Torque who has to fight his way out of prison where he was put by a mad doctor. If it weren’t enough to be thrown together with tough inmates, a demonic force takes over, and hell breaks loose in the compound. Of course he can make it out… and into the evil-ridden streets, which is the background for the second game.

While the story and character development are rather run-of-the-mill, the reason why the game is so fondly remembered is because of its creepy atmosphere and the amount of blood and gore. The latter was of special concern to German authorities, as I still remember how they edited cutscenes with cinematic borders and blackouts, which is a shame, because they’re awesome games. Shooting one’s way through masses of disgusting creatures might not sound very original (although the character can turn into an unstoppable, raging monster, and there are moral decisions to be made), but this doesn’t really matter, as it’s a whole lot of fun, even if the difficulty is extremely high, especially in the sequel.

The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind are now available exclusively on GOG with a 10% discount that will last until September 11, 1PM UTC.
