RTS games usually have a realistic human background, but Pocketwatch Games‘ Tooth and Tail puts animals on the battlefield.
The story twist of the game is quite ingenious, as it’s about a Civil War between animals that decides who eats and who gets eaten. Being a humorous take on riots and revolutions, the comparisons to human beings are obvious with The Longcoats, the Commonfolk, the KSR, and the Civilized behaving in ways that are all too human. The gameplay revolves around the standard RTS template of base and unit building and sending armies against enemies to destroy/eat them.
If the whole concept wasn’t already original enough, it’s great to see that the gameplay that is usually reserved for hardcore stategists is made much more accessible with matches lasting from 5-12 minutes, controls designed for gamepads, and split-screen couch play. The developer calls it a popcorn RTS for veterans and newcomers alike, and by the first looks of it, it seems to work quite well. Voice acting is also pretty good, music fits the war theme, and the pixel graphics offer enough fun animations to make this even more interesting for those who’ve missed the good old Command & Conquer and Starcraft days.
The game is out now for PC as well as on PS4. While the GOG version doesn’t support Crossplay between GOG Galaxy and Steam yet, this feature should hopefully be included soon. For the moment, using the split-screen couch-play (or sitting-in-front-of-the-PC play) option sounds a lot of fun already. And if you want to pass the time, you can also read the QA with the developers.
