Fatbot Games, s. r. o.’s steampunk first-person RPG Vaporum brings back the good old dungeon-crawler gameplay.
Those who can still remember Dungeon Master or have played the recent indie Legend of Grimrock will feel right at home with this release about a stranded survivor finding himself on an island where a mechanical tower invites him to uncover its secrets and battle its enemies. Full of secret rooms with notes of former inhabitants, it’s up to the player how much he wants to learn out about the background story, although one won’t be left alone due to frequent main character narration.
The levels are grid-based, which means that one can only move and turn one step at a time in 90 degrees, although combat takes place in real-time. The RPG system doesn’t involve leveling up and increasing a player’s stats, but it’s all about gadgets that can be added to and activated in the player’s exo-skeleton suit, i.e. one can decide which offensive and defensive ones to use in specific circumstances and against certain enemies. Add some environmental puzzles and a steampunk setting that looks pretty nice with all sorts of high-res backgrounds, character models, and lighting effects, and this could very well be a title that bridges the gap between old-school RPGs and modern technology.
The game is now available on PC with a 10% launch discount that will last until October 5, 5PM UTC.
