The Raiden series has been around for quite some time. I already covered Raiden IV: Overkill in the GOG release news, but of course all the other instalments have hit the digital DRM-free store as well as Steam. Last year Raiden V made its Xbox One debut, but as I rarely keep track of all the Japanese games, it obviously passed me by. Now with the DC hitting PS4 and PC, it’s time to take a look at the latest title.
I won’t go into detail about the story, as it’s rarely thrilling in a shooter game, although this time (English) voice acting is a first for the series and depending on one’s in-game performance, the story should change. However, as far as the trailer goes, it’s certainly not the best of voice acting, and one shouldn’t expect deep characters or an engaging storyline. What games of this type usually excel in is on-screen blasting action, and it delivers in spades here. The action is fast and furious with big bosses to defeat (also featured in the Boss Mission mode under special conditions and with online leaderboards). 2 player co-op gaming should be a lot of fun, and the new “Cheer Attack” that boosts sub-weapons for a limited time seems to be an interesting feature, too. All of this is also in the original game, but there are some additional DC-exclusive levels to be played. If you ask me, I couldn’t distinguish this from countless other shmups, especially with the crazy Japanese music in the background, but then again for a quick round of mindless action, it should be perfect, although the asking price is pretty steep for such a title.
The game is now available on PC and PS4, with the former one having a 15% launch discount that will last until October 17, 5PM UTC.
