20 years after its N64 and PS1 shenanigans, Accolade‘s anthropomorphic bobcat returns with its newest platforming adventure Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back.
A while back I reviewed Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams which was a beautiful throwback to classic platformers, although it was a pretty difficult game. Now the developers Black Forest Games show their programming and art skills with Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, although this time it’s a much simpler gameplay affair, making it more accessible to newcomers.
Hero Bubsy has to take on the alien Woolies who stole his Golden Fleece, which is just an excuse for jumping and pouncing on all sorts of weird enemies, while collecting yarns of wool. Running, gliding, and jumping like crazy won’t win any originality award, but it’s probably enough to give platformer fans what they want: beautiful backgrounds and smooth character animations, a fun soundtrack and silly wisecracking lines of the animal hero (although these can get annoying if they crop up on a regular basis), lots of treasures to find and powers to unlock in order to defeat the bigger bosses. It might not be the longest game, as far as recent comments go, but it still looks like fun.
The game is now available on PC with a 34% launch discount that lasts until tomorrow, November 7, 5 PM UTC. This limited time offer also includes the soundtrack for free. If you’re more of a console gamer, then the PS4 version is for you, although this doesn’t come with the discount or soundtrack.
