Terrible Toybox’ classic point-and-click adventure game Thimbleweed Park already had tons of inappropriate humor dialogues, mostly due to one special protagonist, Ransome the Clown, whose full swearing repertoire can now be heard in the Ransome Unbeeped DLC.
One usually associates additional story, character, or other gameplay elements in a DLC, but anyone expecting different puzzles or plot lines than what the original Thimbleweed Park offered, will be disappointed. When I played and reviewed the original, I found that all the swear words that were replaced by beeping sounds to be what made the clown character’s humor so great. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for uncensored content, but in a way, just like in a show like Rick & Morty, one usually imagines probably even worse words than the unedited dialogue could ever deliver, taking away something that is crucial in the reader’s or player’s interaction with the text/game: filling in the gaps to create individual meaning.
Taking into account that a free update released in June 2017 included new conversations between the main characters, an additional location with the arcade where one could play arcade games, and a hint system, it’s weird to be asked to pay for spoken lines of one character that were already recorded before and could have easily be added for free as well. Granted, the DLC only costs 2 Dollars, and supporting the developer to make another great adventure game is great, but maybe this isn’t the best way to take people’s money. As the subtitles remain unchanged, it’s even more questionable how much the F-bomb dropping really affects the overall gaming experience, especially since there are no plans to release this version on other platforms due to rating issues. So at the moment it’s for PC gamers only. Still, if you want to find out how Ransome sounds uncensored, then check out the official DLC release trailer. Of course the game itself remains a lot of *beep* fun and one of the best *beep* adventure titles in a long *beep* time.
